How Hormones Affect Teen Skin
Entering the teenage years can be a scary time full of new and unknown things. The key to a successful transition? Knowing what is happening and why! Hormonal changes that come with puberty can have an effect on your skin and its health. It might feel impossible to get a handle on it, but trust us, the more you know, the better off you’ll be!
How Hormones Affect Your Skin
A lot of people are aware of the fact that hormones can change your skin and how it reacts to outside stimuli. But what is actually happening? During puberty, the body starts producing androgens, hormones like testosterone and the byproduct of testosterone, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). These hormones stimulate more sebum production resulting in over activity, which clogs pores and can lead to breakouts. More oily skin is also more prone to picking up environmental contaminants that can lead to acne and irritation as well.
Now, if you feel like your acne is worse than your friend’s, don’t worry! Everyone has varying hormone levels, and those who happen to have more androgens will likely experience more acne and breakouts. Not everyone will have the same hormonal changes or reactions to those changes, so try not to compare yourself to your peers.
Microbiomes Of The Skin
Another result of puberty is the change in the skin’s natural microbiome. A microbiome is a large colony of many organisms, primarily bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi, and single-celled eukaryotes. These organisms in the microbiome help to maintain the skin barrier, protect from pathogens, and balance immune responses, among other responsibilities. During puberty, Cutibacterium acnes (which were previously known as Propionibacterium acnes) increase, especially in the latter end of puberty. These bacteria are largely responsible for many of the breakouts you may experience, there are also specific strains of Cutibacterium acnes that can produce metabolites, which cause inflammation in the skin. This means that there is an increased risk of skin problems like acne and irritation, in addition to the effects from over oil production.
Skin Behavior
Not only do hormonal changes cause changes in the microbiome and oil production, but they can also change the way your face’s skin cells actually behave. Androgens can change how skin cells reproduce, affecting the skin’s ability to replenish and heal. These hormones can also alter the level of activity in skin cell receptors, and change how the skin balances inflammatory responses. Combined with the other effects that we have discussed, you might be left feeling absolutely lost on how to deal with puberty’s effects on your skin!
How To Help Your Skin
The best way to start is to maintain a simple, effective skincare routine. Most dermatologists recommend teens use a 3 step routine, with a cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturizer, and SPF, like Girlyish Skincare’s Glowing Girly Routine. Look for products that are low-toxin and endocrine disruptor free (Girlyish Skincare fits this criteria!)
In addition to the basic 3 step routine, some teens who struggle with consistent acne may need see a dermatologist to get more intensive acne treatment. But remember-don’t start adding products with actives and harsher ingredients without consulting a healthcare provider first. Many of these types of products can actually cause more issues in young skin, so avoid experimenting
You’ll also need to be cautious about trendy products, like masks, acne patches, and pore strips. While these types of skincare can be okay in moderation, they aren’t something you want to use frequently. Many have irritating ingredients, and can throw off the already delicate balance that your skin is trying to maintain.
Let Your Skin Breathe
We know it feels overwhelming, but that’s why keeping a simple routine is going to be best for your changing skin. Visit a dermatologist when you can’t get a handle on your breakouts, and remember that good lifestyle habits are extremely helpful in maintaining happy skin. You are well on your way to keeping up with all the changes that come in the teenage years!
